Macau is a Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China

Macau is a Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China. Located across the Pearl River estuary from Hong Kong, until 1999 Macau was an overseas territory of Portugal. One of the world’s most densely populated spots, Macau is best known as Asia’s largest destination for gambling taking in even more revenue than Las Vegas. You could go to Macau for a trip when you come to Guangzhou for Guangzhou Fair.

437

As the first and last European colony in Asia, Macau has more visible colonial history than Hong Kong. Walking through the old city you could convince yourself you were in Europe – if the streets were devoid of people and Chinese-language signage, that is. The Portuguese and Macanese population continues to maintain a presence, but most of the population is native Chinese.

Besides the city itself, Macau includes the islands of Taipa and Coloane, which are connected to Macau by bridges and to each other by a causeway, now built up into the Cotai Strip. The Chinese city of Zhuhai borders Macau to the north, and the border crossing carries heavy two-way vehicular and pedestrian traffic. The Zhuhai Special Economic Zone extends south to Hengqin Island, an area west of Taipa, Cotai and Coloane; the Lotus Bridge from Cotai connects to that area. There is significant movement by the local population of both Zhuhai and Macau across the border, making the two feel like twin cities.

Macau’s economy is based largely on tourism. Other chief economic activities in Macau are export-geared textile and garment manufacturing, banking and other financial services. The clothing industry has provided about three quarters of export earnings, and the gaming, tourism and hospitality industry is estimated to contribute more than 50% of Macau’s GDP, and 70% of Macau government revenue.

Macau is subtropical with hot summers and mild winters. Visitors should note that typhoons often strike from mid-summer to Autumn which could stop many activities there. Although winter is generally mild, there are occasional cold fronts which could make temperatures drop 10°C (50°F) in a day.

According to The World Factbook, Macau has the second highest life expectancy in the world. In addition, Macau is one of the very few regions in Asia with a “very high Human Development Index”, ranking 23rd or 24th in the world in 2007 (with Japan being the highest in Asia; the other Asian countries/regions within the “very high HDI” category are South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Brunei).

One of the interesting things to see in Macau is a statue of the Bodhisatta Avalokitesvara (known as 觀音 kwoon yam in Cantonese) located next to the sea near the Sands Casino and MGM Grand. Despite being a Chinese deity, the statue is distinctly European in design and resembles the statues of the Virgin Mary you can find in Europe.

And if history is not your thing, there is the Macau Tower of awesome views and adventure sports, or Fisherman’s Wharf to enjoy some theme-park activities and shopping.

You’ll find most of the attractions in Macau Peninsula, but Taipa and Coloane, each with a pretty village, also draw hordes of visitors. Visit the Cotai reclaimed land area to see its transformation into the “Las Vegas Strip of the East”. The Venetian is the most famous with its Venice-styled shopping mall with rivers running through, and is also currently the largest casino in the world.

The City of Dreams is a giant casino with high end fashion shops, a free video ‘bubble’ show, three hotels and the world’s most expensive theatre show. The ‘House of Dancing Water’ cost US$250 million and the stage holds five olympic swimming pools worth of water. Ushers give the front few rows of the audience towels. Free shuttles from the main ferry terminal leave constantly.

436

A large section of Macau Peninsula has been designated a Unesco World Heritage site and 25 buildings and sites within the area have been deemed to have cultural and historic significance. One of the best ways to cover the sights is to do the Macau Heritage Walk circuit. The heritage Buildings, the Sao Paulo Cathedral, the Fort and the Macau Museum are all adjacent to each other and can be conveniently seen individually even if one cannot catch the Heritage walk timing.

Taipa Village and Coloane Village, previously inhabited by fishermen, are also interesting with their colonial-era shops and houses along narrow lanes.

Macau has several museums. The “Macau Museum Pass”, which gives discounted entry to most of these, is currently off the market. The main museums, such as the Macau Museum, are in Macau Peninsula although there are two museums on Taipa – the Museum of Taipa and Coloane History and Taipa Houses Museum.

The Temple of Six Banyan Trees in Guangzhou

The Temple of Six Banyan Trees has a long history as a monastery and is well know within China and abroad by those who have an interest in this area. The site contains majestic towers, dense trees, plenty of antiques and valuable heritage from famous people throughout its history. It is one of four Buddhist temple complexes in Guangzhou with the other three being Guangxiao Temple, Hualin Temple and Haizhuang Temple. The Canton Trade Fair will be held in October, Welcome to The Temple of Six Banyan Trees when you come to Guangzhou for the Canton Fair 2013.

410
Originally built in 537, the temple has been rebuilt several times, and the name has also been changed several times from Changshou Temple (meaning Longevity Temple) to Jinghui Temple and finally the current name. It is a name given by the great litterateur Su Dongpo in the Song Dynasty (960 – 1279). It is said that he visited the temple while returning to the north. During the visit, he found six banyan trees there particularly striking. The vitality of the trees put him in a good mood and cheered him up. When the abbot of the temple invited him to suggest a name, Su Dongpo wrote down its present name. Finally, the temple changed its former name (Jinghui Temple) to the name Temple of the Six Banyan Trees. A pagoda in the temple is known variously as Six Banyan Pagoda or Flowery Pagoda.
The architecture that catches the visitors’ eyes most is the Six Banyan Pagoda. It is a pagoda where Buddhist relics are placed. Its roofs curve upwards and look like dark red flower petals. The tip of the pagoda is like stamens, while the whole construction looks like a huge stigma high in the air. Therefore, people like to call it the Flowery Pagoda. The pagoda not only has a nice appearance, but also provides visitors a good place to overlook enchanting scenery around.
To the west of the Six Banyan Pagoda is Daxiong Baodian Hall – the main hall of the temple. The three biggest copper Buddhist statues placed there are among the biggest and most ancient Buddhist statues in Guangdong. The middle one is Sakyamuni, to the left, the Amitabha and to the right, the Apothecary Buddha. They stand for present, past and future.

411
After entering by the mountain gate, the Tianwang Hall is the first hall you will see. The Laughing Buddha is there with smile all over his face to welcome visitors. Behind it is the Weituo Hall. According to legend, Weituo was a general who recaptured the Buddhist relics which had been stolen. He keeps a straight face, looking very serious and frightful, in distinct contrast with the Laughing Buddha.

Keyuan Garden is one of the famous gardens of Guangdong

Keyuan Garden is one of the four famous gardens of Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) in Guangdong Province. The Canton Fair will be held in October, Welcome to Keyuan Garden when you come to Guangzhou for the Canton Fair 2013.

407
With its perfectly manicured gardens, winding paths, pavilions and kiosks, Keyuan Garden is simply divine. Built by Zhang Jingxiu in 1850, it is one of the four famous gardens of the Qing dynasty in Guangdong province and is landscaped into a triangular-shape complete with blue bricks. All features of the garden—hills, lakes, buildings, trees and plants—blend harmoniously with the surroundings and a series of paths extend in all directions. The garden is now under state protection as a national cultural treasure.
Aside from enjoying the serenity that the peaceful environment brings, it is also a great thing to go for a leisurely walk around the garden. The Dongguan Ke Garden showcases not only different types of plants and flowers. This is a good site to see various structures which still follow the traditional architecture from ancient China.

406
Covering an area of 2,200 square meters, the garden has dozens of traditional buildings in it, as well as pavilions, pools, and bridges. It is divided into four parts, including three building groups and one yard. The three building groups are located in the southeast, west, and north of the garden, respectively. The yard is in the middle. You can also walk along the corridor around the yard, through which you will find all the scenes of the garden.

Zhujiang New Town is the area in Guangzhou

Zhujiang New Town (also call zhujiang new city) is the area in Guangzhou, Guangdong, China, which is between Huangpu Avenue in the north and the Pearl River in the south, and between Guangzhou Avenue as the west and the South China Expressway the east.
Zhujiang New Town covers an area of 6.5 square kilometers with a construction area of 14,960 thousand square meters. There are fourteen 20- to 40-hectare blocks inside the city designated by administrative block, residential block, financial and trading block, cultural activity block, and business and shopping blocks. Welcome to Guangzhou for Canton Fair. 394
Being government planned, these new towns always contain large open spaces including parks and public squares. The also have key public buildings such as museums, opera houses, galleries, libraries, and theatres, as well as the usual assortment of offices, hotels, and shopping centres. Two of the most interesting buildings in Zhujiang are the Opera House and the Guangdong Museum, which lie opposite each other.

393
Zhujiang New Town is planned –and progressively taking shape– as the future Central Business District of Guangzhou. When completed, the whole place will become Guangzhou’s counter (part) to the spectacular development of Shanghai’s Lujiazhui Financial District. Just as in Pudong, all the major buildings are developed at great expense and meant to impress: designed by world-class architects known for their bold, forward-looking and state-of-the-art creations.
The Opera House is perhaps the most striking example of Guangzhou’s confidence and competitiveness. The building is Zaha Hadid’s first Opera House. The construction posed formidable engineering challenges, so all credit must go to the Chinese workers and engineers for completing such an incredible building. Hopefully, the Opera House will be able to attract international companies and artistes to perform regularly in Guangzhou.
