Guangxiao temple has an important place in Buddhist history

Guāngxiào Sì, historically known as Temple of Bright Filial Piety or Kwong Hau Temple) on Guangxiao Road is one of the oldest Buddhist temples in Guangzhou, Guangdong province, China. It was the mansion of Prince Zhao Jiande of the Nanyue Kingdom during the Western Han Dynasty (206 B.C.-A.D.24). 312
The temple was initially built by an Indian monk during the Eastern Jin Dynasty (317- 420) but the present temple, occupying an area of 31,000 square meters, dates from the Qing Dynasty (1644 – 1911). The temple has an important place in Buddhist history as Huineng of the Zen Buddhist sect was a novice monk here in the 7th century.
The Grand Hall, the main building in Guangxiao Temple, was built on a high platform, flanked by a Bell Tower and a Drum Tower. Inside the Grand Hall, there are three giant Buddha statues, the Sakyamuni, the Buddha of Wisdom, and the Samantabhadra.

The East and West Iron Pagodas in the temple are the oldest extant pagodas in China. The West Iron Pagoda, which has high artistic value, was built earlier than East Iron Pagoda which forms a square and has seven storeys. It is 7.69-meters in height overall. The body is covered with more than 900 niches for Buddhas.

It is one of the significant steps of Guangdong Provincial Government to implement free admission to museums, public libraries and cultural centers and stations. It is believed that considerable number of people would welcome this amiable and free arts feast and enjoy the charm of art in the museum. After the implementation of free admission, Guangdong Museum of Art will distribute tickets to control the visitor flow. “The museum will receive only 3000 visitors per day on a first-come-first-served basis and please note you’ll be asked to exhibit an identity document to get a ticket”, said one of the staff.

Haizhu Bridge is an iron bridge across the Pearl River in Guangzhou

Haizhu Bridge is an iron bridge across the Pearl River in Guangzhou, China.

The bridge runs from Haizhu Square in the Yuexiu District, and south towards Jiangnan Avenue in the Haizhu District. Haizhu Bridge was the first bridge to be built across the Pearl River in Guangzhou. Work started in 1929 and ended in 1933, and was completed by the American contractor Markton Company.

The bridge was damaged by the Japanese in 1938, and again in 1949 by retreating Kuomintang forces. Today the bridge carries a two-lane, bidirectional road connecting the north and south banks of the Pearl River. In 2009, the bridge gained notoriety when a number of people threatened suicide by jumping off the bridge.

The renovation work on Guangzhou’s Haizhu Bridge will begin sometime this month. Two design and construction firms won the bidding yesterday (1st).  One of the two firms, the China Railway Major Bridge Engineering Group, is regarded as one of the most experienced since it built many of China’s major bridges, including those in Wuhan and Nanjing. It comprises of a main office building (90 storeys), along with two apartment buildings (34 storeys), and a four storey shopping mall. It is named after the CITIC Group (formerly China International Trust and Investment Company) and is a state-owned enterprise.

Its structural height is 391 m (1,283 ft) including two tall antennas like spires on the top. When it was completed in 1997, it was the tallest building in the world outside of New York and Chicago.

China’s largest trade fair in 2013

The spring session of the Canton Fair, China’s largest trade fair, saw more overseas buyers and larger trade deals in comparison to last year’s autumn session, the event’s organizers said Sunday, indicating that trade may see a modest recovery this year.

The 113th session of the Canton Fair, which closed on Sunday, received 202,766 overseas purchasers, up 7.06 percent from the previous session held last October, fair spokesman Liu Jianjun said.

Nearly 25,000 companies, including 562 from 38 countries or regions such as the Republic of Korea and India, are attending the fair, China’s largest.

The fair, or China Import and Export Fair, will further promote the integration of the country’s economy with the world, the stabilization of exports and expansion of imports, said China’s Vice Minister of Commerce Li Jinzao.

The fair will focus on exports so as to realize the stable growth of China’s foreign trade, said Li. The country will try to enhance the competitiveness of domestic firms by technological innovations, cultivating home brands, improving quality of products and services, he added.

293  Behind the square is the memorial archway, on which the name of the palace is written over the top, and some inscriptions written on both sides. Once you have gone through it, you will come to the main gate where honored the statues of two legendary immortals, Clairvoyance (thousand-mile eye) and clairaudience (wind-accompanying ear).
Walking up the flagged path after entering the gate, you will come to the Hall of Blessing where a statue of the heavenly empress is honored. She is guarded by four Dragon Kings (the Gods of the sea) holding up a jade tablet and standing at each side. Then comes the Main Hall, the center of the whole palace. In the hall, two statues of the Goddess are honored in a shrine. One is 3.8 meters (about 12.5 feet) high, plated and carved from the fragrant sandalwood. The other is known as ‘soft-body’ statue, whose hand and foot joints are movable. The entire Main Hall is filled with a sense of benevolence and majesty, rectitude and holiness. Behind it is the Resting Hall, the living room of the Goddess, where a sitting sculpture of the goddess is displayed together with some simple instruments of her daily life.

At the very back of the palace is the Nanling Tower, an 8-storey building. It rises to a height of 45 meters (about 148 feet) and is the highest point of the whole palace. There is an unwritten folklore spread widely among Chinese people that the code of a God is singular, while that of a Goddess is plural. Shangxiajiu Walking Street is in Liwan District, it is one of the most popular commercial centers located in Guangzhou. The street is around 800 meters long and has 250 stores on each side of the street. It is the first ever commercial walking street in the city and was officially opened in 1995.
