The name Dongshan comes from a mountain in Xiaodongyuan, north of Guangzhou City at ancient times. This mountain was opposite to the Xi shan (Mountain West ) in northwest of Liuhua Lake and the Beishan (Mountain North) (Mountain Yuexiu) in the north of the city, so it got the name Dongshan (Mountain East). Dongshan Lake is called Donghu for short, corresponding to Xihu in Yaozhou. Prior to 1958, the lake was not well maintained, but in 1959, efforts were made to rehabilitate the lake in order to open it to the public. The Park beauty emerges from its simple and natural decoration. In the middle of the lake, there are 2 islands that can be reached by any of five different bridges. One of the best times of the year to visit Dongshan is the spring when all the flowers are in bloom. The Five Arch Bridge makes visitors feel the openness and quietness in the depth of the suburbs.

The wetlands are known as the kidney of the earth with the birds inhabiting there. The Dongshan Lake Park makes efforts to create a wetland environment. In recent years, the Dongshan Lake Park has removed the walls and invested 10 million in its renovation. The park is extended from the downtown area to the Pearl River bank. The management authority has planted lotus in the south and reeds and arrowhead beside the lotus. When the plants are combined with the original lake, a wetland is in place. This small wetland has attracted birds.
In addition to birds, the five little ducks swimming on the lake also bring a lot of joy to the children. These ducks are raised by the park. “It is mainly to create the environment. We plant lotus and the snail will eat the lotus roots. And we raised ducks, duck will eat snails. That’s how we get this ecological balance.”
